Buried Cache of Silver Coins Recovered – Montgomery County, Texas

Sometimes the items we recover aren’t lost by accident—they were intentionally hidden years earlier.

That was the case when I received a call from Paul regarding a buried cache of silver coins at his home in Montgomery County, Texas.

Back in 2004, Paul decided to store a portion of his savings in physical silver coins. Rather than placing them in a safe or safety deposit box, he took a different approach. The coins were sealed inside a 4-inch PVC pipe and buried in the backyard for safekeeping.

Over the years the yard changed. Landscaping shifted, vegetation grew, and the exact burial location slowly became less certain. When Paul recently decided to sell the property, he realized the silver coins were still somewhere in the yard—but locating the precise spot had become more difficult than expected.

After several unsuccessful attempts to find the cache on his own, Paul contacted Houston Metal Detecting Services to help locate the buried silver.

Locating the Buried Cache

Recovering buried valuables requires a systematic search approach. Even when the general area is known, soil movement and landscape changes over time can make the exact location difficult to pinpoint.

Using professional metal detecting equipment capable of detecting deeper and larger metallic targets, we began scanning the suspected area of the backyard. The goal was to locate a consistent signal that matched what we would expect from a PVC container filled with silver coins.

After working through the area methodically, a strong and repeatable signal was identified that stood out from the surrounding ground targets.

Unearthing the Silver

Once the signal was confirmed, excavation began carefully at the target location.

Just below the surface, the search revealed exactly what Paul had buried years earlier—a PVC pipe filled with silver coins, preserved underground for nearly two decades.

The buried cache was successfully recovered and returned to Paul before the sale of his home.
