Texas A&M Aggie Ring Recovered from Flooded Rice Field in Pattison, Texas

A Duck Hunt Turns into a Search for a Lost Aggie Ring

It was a crisp January morning when I met David at a duck hunting lease in Pattison, Texas. David, a proud member of Texas A&M’s Class of 2025, had lost his cherished Aggie ring while on a weekend duck hunt with friends.

The ring had been loose on his finger for some time, and despite his best efforts to keep it secure, it now rested somewhere beneath nearly two feet of water in a muddy rice field.

For many Aggies, the class ring is far more than jewelry — it represents years of hard work, tradition, and pride. Losing one can feel devastating.

How the Ring Was Lost in the Rice Field

David explained that the mishap occurred shortly after sunrise while deploying duck decoys before the hunt began.

Knowing the ring was loose, he had placed it in his jacket pocket for safekeeping. Later that morning, while reaching for his phone in the same pocket, the ring slipped out unnoticed and disappeared into the murky water below.

When I arrived, David greeted me with a mix of optimism and concern.

“I’ve narrowed it down to about a 20-by-20 foot area,” he explained, pointing toward the flooded field.

His hunting partners had marked the approximate location with a reed sticking out of the water — a simple step that can dramatically increase the chances of a successful recovery.

I immediately commended him for that decision. Marking the location of a lost item in water is critical to any successful metal detecting recovery.

Searching the Flooded Rice Field

We grabbed the necessary gear and made the short walk across the muddy field to the duck blind.

The water was cold and the mud beneath our feet reminded me why patience and methodical search techniques are essential when recovering lost items underwater.

David stood near the reed marker, watching carefully as I began to grid the search area.

Using a professional metal detector designed for shallow water recovery, I slowly swept the detector coil across the muddy bottom.

Within moments, I heard the unmistakable sound of a strong metal signal.

The Aggie Ring Appears

Carefully digging into the mud, I scooped the target using my XTREME Scoop recovery tool.

As the mud drained through the scoop holes, a flash of gold appeared among the grass and silt.

David’s Aggie ring was sitting right there in the scoop.

The relief and excitement on David’s face said everything.

“I can’t thank you enough,” he said.
“This ring means everything to me.”

Why Acting Quickly Matters in Lost Ring Recoveries

This successful recovery highlights an important lesson: acting quickly after losing a valuable item dramatically improves the chances of finding it.

In this case, David did several things exactly right:

• He recognized the ring was lost quickly
• He narrowed down the search area
• He marked the location with a visible marker
• He contacted a professional metal detecting recovery service

These simple steps can make the difference between a successful recovery and a permanent loss.
